Working Towards a Common Goal

The responsibilities of a marketing team differ from those of sales. Both departments play a crucial role in generating revenue for a company.

The Sales Team

One could reasonably argue that a sales team is responsible for a company’s revenue. After all, they’re putting in the hard work, interacting with potential clients or customers, and getting them to purchase. Where marketers generate interest, a salesperson’s goal is to convert those leads into paying customers. The sales team is also tasked with listening to and addressing customers' concerns in real-time while effectively communicating a product’s value.

The Marketing Team

At the same time, the people who generate interest and engagement between a product and its target audience are the marketing team. If a marketer’s efforts are successful in their tactics, it directly impacts an increase in sales. The marketing team is also the people who will have a more detailed perspective on who exactly the ideal customers are and who is more likely to be interested in the product or service a company offers and will tailor their efforts to make sure that they get those people on board.

The Bigger Picture

A marketing team’s primary focus and goal is to create demand and interest for a particular product or service a business provides. This leads a sales team to take those interested people and focus on closing deals for the company.

One cannot exist without the other; this symbiotic relationship works both ways. A sales team can also approach a marketing team member and relay which tactics they see are most effective in generating sales and which aren’t. A good marketer will listen and adjust their future campaigns accordingly. Both the marketing and sales team’s efforts are intertwined. Their efforts must co-exist for a business to succeed and achieve a common goal: generating revenue.
